Prejmer, south-east Transylvania, Romania. This fortified church was built by the Teutonic Knights in the early 13th century. As this part of the world was constantly threatened by the Otoman Empire for several century, fortified churches often sheltered the local communities. Some of the fortified churches, like the one in Prejmer, provided rooms for every family in the village - see my "Prejmer II" for these rooms. In peace time, these rooms served as miniatural / secondary barns. That allowed these medieval fortresses to survive till now.
