Los caracteres simplificados se conocen como "jiǎntǐzì" (en {{zh|''jiǎntǐzì''|s=简体字|t=簡體字}}), que significa «caracteres de forma simple». También se los llama "jiǎnhuàzì", aunque es menos frecuente (en {{zh|''jiǎnhuàzì''|s=简化字|t=簡化字}}: «caracteres simplificados»).
