El físico de Berkeley [[J. Robert Oppenheimer]] fue el director científico del [[Manhattan Project|Proyecto Manhattan]], el cual desarrolló la primera bomba nuclear. Oppenheimer dirigió personalmente el proyecto desde [[Los Álamos (Nuevo México)]], durante la [[Segunda Guerra Mundial]]. [[Edward Teller]], miembro de la facultad (junto con [[Stanislaw Ulam]]) es considerado el "padre de la [[bomba de hidrógeno]]".
