<!--| ResumenBreve = The episode opens with Montalbano's discovery, in an abandoned villa, of the naked body of Michela Licalzi, a young woman who was married to a wealthy and complaisant older man. Michela has been strangled during sex; near her body is a violin case. It turns out that she had owned a priceless Guarnieri del Gesù violin. Montalbano questions Michela's husband and her closest friend, Anna, a local school teacher, who takes a fancy to Montalbano. He discovers that Michela's lover was an antiques dealer from [[Bologna]] who is in financial difficulties because of his gambling problem. Montalbano and Livia go to the home Francois (their potential adoptee) has been living, to be safe, and learn that Francois does not want to leave with them and be adopted by them because he has become so attached to the temporary family and their children. This ends the planned marriage of Montalbano/Livia.-->

| ShortSummary = A seventy-year-old prostitute, who is happily married to a local waiter and who plies her successful life-long trade in a sedate apartment, is murdered by strangulation. Fazio calls Montelbano to request his return from his vacation in Genoa, because deputy chief Mimì Augello develops a bizarre erotic asphyxiation theory of the crime and is convinced a thirty-something slacker, Mimmo Tavano, a client of the prostitute is the killer. Montalbano and his investigators, puzzled over this rather peculiar lifestyle of a married hooker and her happy husband look for a more straightforward solution to the crime. Later Tavano is also murdered in the same way (apparently) by strangulation, complicating the problem of the first murder. They have many suspects who could have done it and one by one they eliminate them to get to the final answer, which actually involves two killers since each murder is distinct in motive, though related.

| ShortSummary = A man shot in the back is found at the construction site of the new Vigata water pipeline. Montalbano, noting that the man was in underwear, presumes he lives locally and must have been fleeing his murderer. Montalbano and faithful Fazio quickly locate his home and identify him. This is Gerardo Nicotra, accountant of the same construction company working on the pipeline. Montalbano tries to locate Nicotra's German wife, Inge, but she is missing. Meanwhile, the journalist Lucia Gambardella, who has been investigating rigged contracts in Vigata for years, informs Montalbano that her informant, Saverio Piscopo, had an attempt on his life, before he could report massive corruption among the various construction companies in the province. Montalbano, takes charge of Piscopo's security, and investigates Nicotra's life. And after a series of misdirections and lies, he realizes that Nicotra's death and Piscopo's injury are connected by a group of six construction companies owned by mafia families that are colluding on these public construction contracts.

| ShortSummary = The businessman Cosimo Barletta is killed by a gunshot wound to the head while he is having breakfast in the morning at his seaside villa. During the investigation, twenty envelopes containing photographs of young naked girls taken during relations with Barletta are discovered. The victim was also a well-known loan shark and had many enemies in Vigata. The results of the autopsy is a real twist: Barletta was actually poisoned with a powerful medicine dissolved in coffee, while the gunshot took place later. Montalbano senses that the crime was committed by two different killers, who acted almost simultaneously but unbeknownst to each other. Initially the investigation focuses on the girls blackmailed by the victim, which, however, all have unassailable alibis. In the last month, however, Barletta had fallen in love with a new girl, to whom he had promised a large sum of money, a house and was about to - just on the morning of the murder - to modify his will. Montalbano will finally discover that the gunshot was by Arturo Barletta, the victim's underdog son with serious financial problems, while the poisoning had been caused by his daughter Giovanna, who had long had an incestuous relationship with his father and was therefore jealous of the new girlfriend, as well as fearful of losing too much of the legacy. Then the other thread of the story comes in via the vagabond Camastra, who became friends with Montalbano and Livia. They discover that the old man, too cultured and refined to be a simple homeless guy, was once a famous surgeon who fell out of favor after the death of a patient. Camastra says he witnessed the suicide of Barletta's wife, who threw herself into the sea after discovering the affair between her husband and daughter. Just before Giovanna is arrested, she commits suicide with the same poison used for her father, and she leaves a note.

| ShortSummary = Montalbano investigates the gruesome murder of a young woman, whose body is found naked half-wrapped in a blood-soaked towel, in the hall of a building. After being attacked and stabbed, she had driven herself to this residential building and Montalbano has to figure out why she dragged herself there rather than to a hospital. Montalbano determines she is a prostitute from Eastern Europe and there is a major prostitution and drug ring being run by the mafia Cuffaro family. The mafia put a hit out on Montalbano to stop him from investigating and ruining their business. He is nearly murdered. But Livia identifies that he was saved by one of the mafia killers because of a previous life-saving act Montalbano had performed for this hit man. Montalbano goes on to uncover that a murdered photographer, connected to the murdered girl, was hired to film the violence against the murdered young woman. Suspecting corruption at high levels in government, Montalbano makes copies of the film, since it turns out that the prosecutor tries to cover up the murder of the girl. But Montalbano succeeds in exposing the highly corrupt mayor of Vigata as the ringleader of this sadistic group that committed the murders. That primary investigation is intertwined with the story of an elderly retired judge who has moved to a house near Montalbano. He is obsessed with reviewing all the cases he has performed, to make sure he has never been non-objective in his judgments, due to his own personal problems. The judge questions Montalbano on the detective's certainty of all those people the detective has arrested. Montalbano affirms he is absolutely confident of the guilt of those he has captured. Sadly the judge decides that one of his own cases resulted in an innocent man being imprisoned, who died there; the judge cannot live with this fact and immolates himself in his house.
