Se relacionan con las plantas terrestres, encontrándose similitudes con las [[Bryophyta sensu lato|briofitas]] en la prefiguración del [[arquegonio]] y la posesión de la enzima glicolato oxidasa (fotorrespiración), lo que permitió a las primeras plantas terrestres fotosintetizar en un ambiente rico en oxígeno.
