El padre de Wellman era natural de [[Nueva Inglaterra]], con ascendencia inglesa-galesa-escocesa e irlandesa. Su madre, muy querida por el gran director, fue una inmigrante irlandesa llamada Cecilia McCarthy. Era tataranieto de [[Francis Lewis]] de New York, uno de los firmantes de La ''[[Declaración de Independencia]]''.

Wellman se casó cuatro veces y tuvo siete hijos con sus cuarta mujer, Dorothy, entre ellos los actores [[Michael Wellman]], [[William Wellman Jr.]], [[Gloria Wellman]] y [[Cissy Wellman]]. Murió de [[leucemia]] en 1975.
