En el año 1994, el género ''Ochetorhynchus'' se utilizó para situar en él a ''Upucerthia harterti'' y ''U. certhioides'',<ref>Ridgely, R. S., and G. Tudor (1994). The Auk, 891-911.</ref> Sin embargo, la especie tipo de ''Ochetorhynchus'' era ''Ochetorhynchus ruficaudus'', por lo que el nombre no estaba disponible para emplearlo sólo en las 2 primeras especies, a menos que ''U. ruficaudus'' también sea incluida, como sí lo hizo Petersen en 1951,<ref>Peters, J. El género ''Upucerthia'' se ha demostrado que es altamente polifilético.<ref>Chesser, R. T., F. K. Barker, and R. T. Brumfield (2007). Four-fold polyphyly of the genus formerly known as Upucerthia, with notes on the systematics and evolution of the avian subfamily Furnariinae.-Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution 44:13201332.</ref> Es por esta razón que Chesser y Brumfield, tras comprobar que no había otro nombre disponible, crearon el nuevo género ''Tarphonomus'' para incluir sólo a ''U. certhioides'' y a ''U. harterti'', concluyendo que es imposible fusionar estas 2 especies dentro del género hermano ''Pseudocolaptes''.
