Sami Khan Solanki (1958, Karachi, Pakistán) es director del Instituto Max Planck para la investigación del Sistema Solar (MPS), director del Dto. de Heliosfera Solar del MPS, miembro científico de la Sociedad Max Planck,[1][2] y catedrático (y vocero) de International Max Planck Research School on Physical Processes in the Solar System and Beyond de las Universidades de Braunschweig y Gotinga.[3]

Solanki es también Profesor Honorario del Instituto de Astronomía del Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich,[4] and (2) Institute for Geophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics at the Braunschweig University of Technology in Germany. Además, ha sido Profesor Distinguido de la Kyung Hee University de Corea.
Es editor en jefe del Living Reviews in Solar Physics, una revista exclusivamente en la web, revisada por expertos, publicando revisiones de estudios en las áreas de la física solar y su heliosfera. Controversias
La investigación de Solanki ha sido citado como parte de la Global warming controversy, for instance in an article in the Telegraph.co.uk in 2004[12][13] as taking a sceptical position:
the impact of more intense sunshine on the ozone layer and on cloud cover could be affecting the climate more than the sunlight itself
Sin embargo, la misma investigación ha sido citada como evidencia de calentamiento global en nuevos lanzamientos de la Sociedad Max Planck[14] a pesar de que es citado como llamado a una mayor investigación, diciendo::
"Qué tan grande es ese papel, que aún debe ser investigado, ya que, según nuestro conocimientos más reciente de las variaciones del campo magnético solar, el aumento significativo de la temperatura de la Tierra desde el año 1980 es de hecho que se le atribuye al efecto invernadero provocado por el dióxido de carbono"
