En 965, Merseburgo se convirtió en el centro de una [[marca (territorio)|marca]] más restrictiva y más pequeña, perteneciente a [[Gunter de Merseburgo|Gunter]]. A la muerte de Gunter en 982, fue unida a la Marca de Meissen.
