Francis Jeffrey Bell

Francis Jeffrey Bell (Calcuta, 26 de enero de 1855 - Londres, 1 de abril de 1924) fue un zoólogo inglés especializado en equinodermos. Pasó la mayor parte de su vida en el Museo Británico de Historia Natural y también fue profesor de anatomía comparada en King's College.

Bell nació en Calcuta el 26 de enero de 1855,[2]​ hijo de Francis Jeffrey Bell. Fue a la escuela en el Christ's Hospital de Londres.[2]​ En enero de 1874 se matriculó como estudiante en el Magdalen College, Oxford, donde estudió zoología y se dedicó a la anatomía comparada con George Rolleston. Se graduó cum laude en 1878 con una licenciatura en ciencias naturales. En ese año también recibió un nombramiento como asistente en el departamento de zoología del Museo Británico (Historia Natural), bajo la dirección de Albert Günther. Conservó ese puesto hasta su jubilación en 1919. En 1878, su traducción de "Grundzüge der vergleichenden Anatomie" de Gegenbaur (1859) apareció como "Elementos de anatomía comparada" [3]​ which has long been used as a reference work. He obtained his MA in Oxford in 1881.[4]​ que se ha utilizado durante mucho tiempo como obra de referencia. Obtuvo su maestría en Oxford en 1881.[4]​ En 1885 él mismo publicó el "Manual de Anatomía y Fisiología Comparada", que se convirtió en un trabajo ampliamente utilizado entre los estudiantes de medicina. De 1879 a 1897[5]​ fue profesor de anatomía comparada en King's College. En 1897 se convirtió en profesor emérito y miembro de esa facultad.

Además de ser autor de varios trabajos sobre anatomía, Bell es más conocido por sus numerosas publicaciones sobre equinodermos. En 1892 publicó la obra estándar "Catálogo de equinodermos británicos en el Museo Británico".

Francis Jeffrey Bell murió el 1 de abril de 1924 como consecuencia de un accidente.
