Setting out at dusk they were near the summit at day-break. The Phocians stationed there were so terrified at sight of them thatthey fled from the path and took refuge on the highest point of the ridge. ThePersians paid no attention to them, but hurried along the path, and began de-scending the mountain on the other side. The watchful scouts of Leonidas,however, had brought him news of his mortal peril several hours before.
