En las revisiones de la prensa local de Sevilla y Huelva desde enero de 1889 hasta diciembre de 1890 en el Archivo Municipal de la Capital hispalense y el Archivo Municipal de Huelva (Casa Colón) no consta noticia alguna en referencia a la fundación de ninguna sociedad en Sevilla dedicada al "''football''", así como tampoco consta dicho extremo ni en el Archivo Histórico Provincial de Sevilla (es complementario al Archivo Municipal de Sevilla) ni en la Guía Gómez Zarzuela durante los años 1890, 1891, 1892 y 1893 (Guía local dedicada a recopilar datos de las sociedad existentes y de nueva creación de Sevilla. Archivo Municipal de Sevilla. Hemeroteca). Por último, en las revisiones del Padrón Histórico Municipal de Sevilla (planta 2.ª del Archivo Municipal de Sevilla) tampoco consta que en la Calle Bailén 41 estuviera ubicada la secretariasecretaría de ninguna sociedad o club, tal y como afirman algunos historiadores (ver recortes que se muestran a continuación, en concreto la hoja padronal de 1890/1 de la C/Bailén nº41). El ''Recreation'' en aquella época jugó contra un Club inglés de Sevilla, pero no consta que fuera contra un “''Sevilla Football Club''”.
 
El primer partido que dicho club jugó fue frente a los magnates de la empresa minera propiedad de ingleses, [[Rio Tinto Company Limited]], que vivían en Sevilla, con un resultado de 2:0 favorable a los onubenses. El ''Recreation'' llevó a Sevilla a seis onubenses y diecinueve británicos componiendo un curioso "once inicial" de solo diez jugadores: ''Alcok, Yates, Wakelin, Duclós, Coto, Kirk, Daniels, Curtis, Gibbon y Badley''. En un segundo encuentro venció el equipo local por 2-1, cobrándose el Recreativo la victoria en la revancha ya en tierras onubenses. Este partido es considerado por la Federación Española de Fútbol como el primer partido que se juega en suelo español. El Club Recreativo demostraba una capacidad organizativa fuera de lo normal para una sociedad de ''Sports'' de esa época. El ''Recreation Club'' solía jugar muchas partidas de ''football'' y cricket contra el Club de Río Tinto (notas del 6 de mayo de 1892 y de 28 de abril de 1892). Aunque con el Club de Riotinto hay constancia de enfrentamientos desde finales de 1889.
