El Paleolítico se caracteriza, a grandes rasgos, por la utilización de instrumentos gruesos, pesados, difíciles de manejar, mal trabajados en su mayoría. No tienen plena capacidad constructora. Tradicionalmente el Paleolítico se divide en tres [[Periodización|períodos]], el [[Paleolítico Inferior]], el [[Paleolítico Medio]] y el [[Paleolítico Superior]]; a él se le añade un período terminal llamado [[Epipaleolítico]] (la etapa siguiente al ''Epipaleolítico'' y anterior al [[Neolítico]] es el [[Mesolítico]]).
