En su apertura contó con 38 estudiantes. Durante los cinco años siguientes fue renombrada tres veces: ''Escuela de cine de la oficina cinematográfica del ministerio de cultura'' (julio de 1951), ''Escuela de Cine de Pekín'' (marzo de 1953), y finalmente ''Academia de Cine de Pekín'' ([[1 de junio]] de [[1956]]).

The admission rate at PekínBeijing Film Academy is one of the lowest in the country, as well as globally. Admission is extremely competitive. Over 100,000 students apply annually to participate in entrance exams. Only 400-500 students are accepted. The majority of the admissions process takes place in February and March.
