El álbum fue apoyado por los sencillos "Sandwitches", con Hodgy Beats, y "Yonkers", el último de los cuales se considera responsable de generar el gran revuelo en internet y en la industria que rodea al grupo OFWGKTA en el momento del lanzamiento del álbum. Tras su lanzamiento, Goblin recibió críticas generalmente positivas de los críticos musicales.[2]​

Antecedentes y lanzamiento editar

El 8 de octubre de 2010, Tyler y Hodgy Beats lanzaron "Sandwitches" gratis en la página oficial de Odd Future, afirmando que no iba a estar en ningún álbum. El 10 de febrero de 2011, Tyler lanzó el video de su primer sencillo, "Yonkers", del álbum. Cuatro días después, se lanzó una versión extendida con un verso adicional en iTunes, junto con una versión extendida de la pista "Sandwitches" lanzada anteriormente. El 16 de febrero, Tyler y Hodgy interpretaron "Sandwitches" en Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, convirtiéndose en la primera aparición en televisión de cualquier miembro de Odd Future.

Un mes después, el 16 de marzo de 2011, Tyler y Hodgy interpretaron las canciones "Yonkers" y "Sandwitches" en los mtvU Woodie Awards con el resto de Odd Future. Ese mismo día, se lanzó en línea una vista previa de "Tron Cat" como promoción del álbum.

También en marzo, la portada del álbum se publicó en línea con una imagen en color de Buffalo Bill cuando tenía 19 años, y se presentó como telón de fondo para la actuación de Tyler en MTV. El 24 de marzo, Tyler publicó la lista de canciones en su Twitter y la canción "Sandwitches" se incluiría en el álbum. En marzo y abril, se lanzaron pedidos anticipados en Amazon para las ediciones estándar y de lujo, respectivamente. Los pedidos anticipados de ambas versiones se lanzaron en iTunes el 15 de abril.

El 21 de abril, Tyler publicó varias imágenes de la filmación de un nuevo video musical, seguido de un anuncio de que el video estaba terminado al día siguiente. El 22 de abril, Tyler lanzó un video promocional en el que él mismo interpretaba a un personaje llamado Thurnis Haley, que es golfista.[3]​[4]​ Varios días después se lanzaron una segunda y una tercera promoción. El 28 de abril, Tron Cat se filtró en línea. El 30 de abril, aparecieron fragmentos del álbum en Amazon. El 3 de mayo, Tyler y Hodgy interpretaron "Sandwitches" y "Analog" en la BBC, junto con ellos interpretando "65" del próximo álbum MellowHype.

El tercer sencillo que se lanzó del álbum fue "She" con Frank Ocean.[5]​ El 9 de mayo de 2011, Tyler publicó una imagen de una pantalla de televisión en su Twitter, con el título "She". El video musical de "She" fue lanzado el 3 de junio de 2011.

Se anunció que el cuarto sencillo del álbum sería "Bitch Suck Dick", con Jasper Dolphin & Taco. El video musical fue lanzado a las 5pm hora occidental/8pm hora del este el 11 de octubre de 2011.[6]​

Tyler ha dicho que se suponía que el álbum presentaría la canción "Llama" con Earl Sweatshirt, sin embargo, se eliminó debido a que su madre no le dio permiso a Tyler para usar su voz. También ha dicho que, sin embargo, puede incluirse en su tercer álbum de estudio, Wolf.[7]​

Goblin también se lanzó como una edición de lujo con ilustraciones y empaques alternativos, un póster, letras y un segundo disco que contiene tres pistas adicionales. Tyler lanzó el álbum de lujo en su Flickr el 4 de abril de 2011.[8]​

"Sandwitches", featuring vocals from Hodgy Beats, is a violent song with Tyler's verse talking about killing those more fortunate than him, with Hodgy's verse discussing how he feels that all religious people, particularly Christians, are hypocritical, with him naming his mother as a leading example. "Sandwitches" was the first official song to be released as a single for the album.

The second track on the album is "Yonkers", the album's second, and most successful, single, which was the song that brought about Tyler's mainstream popularity. The song revolves around a repetitive 2 note bassline and distorted drum sounds. In addition he is talking to Dr. TC (who is his conscience) while fighting his alter ego which is Wolf Haley, contradicting every line with the verse after, such as; "Green paper, gold teeth, and pregnant gold retrievers (a bitch) all I want" then follows up with "Fuck money, diamonds and bitches don't need 'em'" The song had slight controversy surrounding it due to a violent diss to rapper B.o.B and singers Hayley Williams (of Paramore) and Bruno Mars. The controversial lyrics were "(What do you think of Hayley Williams?) Fuck her, Wolf Haley robbing 'em/ I'll crash that fucking airplane that that faggot nigga B.o.B is in/ and stab Bruno Mars in his goddamn esophagus/ and wont stop until the cops come in".[9]​ The song also gained praise from acclaimed rappers such as Kanye West.[10]​ At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the "Yonkers" video won Tyler the Best New Artist award. The clip was also nominated for Video of the Year; however, it lost to the video of Katy Perry's "Firework".

The fourth track, "She", features Frank Ocean, who performs the first verse and chorus. In the song, Tyler talks about spying on the girl that he loves and about necrophilia, with Tyler wanting to "drag [her] lifeless body to the forest" and to want to then "fornicate with it". The song was the album's third single.

Bitch Suck Dick editar

"Bitch Suck Dick", featuring Jasper Dolphin and Taco, is a comedy song about abusing women and making them give them oral sex, as well as forcing them to do things such as massage their shoulders and wash their dishes. At the end of the song, Tyler tells Jasper and Taco that he loves them and then shoots them. The song was released as the album's fourth single on 11 de octubre de 2011.

The album debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 45,000 copies in the United States.[11]​ On the week of 28 de agosto de 2011 Goblin climbed up ninety-two spots on the Billboard 200. Earlier that month the album nearly left the charts, before winning MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.[12]​

Upon its release, the album received generally positive reviews from most music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 73, based on 36 reviews, which indicates "generally favorable reviews."[22]​ Jon Dolan from Rolling Stone awarded Goblin 3 and a half, out of 5 stars, complimenting the album's "lush, left-field R&B-tinged tracks" along with its "early-Eminem evil" lyrics.[23]​ David Jeffries of Allmusic.com also gave it 3 and a half, out of 5 stars, commenting that "Tyler’s production is as attractive as ever, contrasting his disgusting rhymes and gruff voice with subdued, sometimes serene beats that echo and creep."[24]​ Slant Magazine critic Huw Jones, awarded the album a 4 and a half, out of 5 star rating, praising it's production and stating that "Goblin could well be one of the decade's most significant releases...a masterpiece for those capable of stomaching it."[25]​

Although reviewers like Jen Long from the BBC enjoyed Tyler's lyrical "run of shock tactics reminiscent of Eminem",[26]​ many strongly criticized the similarity. Joshua Errett of Now Magazine Canada, said that someone should have informed Tyler that "Eminem already did this 15 years ago", giving Goblin 2 out of 5 stars.[16]​ Randal Roberts from the LA Times commented that the album just "presses the same button that Elvis, Johnny Rotten, Chuck D and Eminem did" and after "about 50 minutes you just want Tyler, the Creator to shut the hell up", giving it 2 out of 4 stars.[13]​
