Michael Raymond Donald Ashley (Southall, Middlesex; 1 de octubre de 1948)[1]​ es un historiador, bibliógrafo, escritor, crítico y editor de ciencia ficción, misterio y fantasía británico.

Es el editor de la extensa serie de antologías de relatos cortos Mammoth Book, cada una de las cuales se centra en torno a un tema en particular en el género del misterio, la fantasía o la ciencia ficción. Ashley se centra especialmente en las revistas de ficción y ha escrito una historia de varios volúmenes sobre el tema titulada History of the Science Fiction Magazine y un estudio de las revistas de ficción británicas, The Age of the Storytellers.

Es autor de la novela The Enchantresses (1998), junto a Vera Chapman.[1]​ Ha colaborado en numerosas obras de referencia, como The Encyclopedia of Fantasy o The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Escribió los libros para las exposiciones de The British Library Taking Liberties en 2008 y Out of This World: Science Fiction But Not As You Know It en 2011.[2]​ Publicó los fanzines Plinth, ...And Behold, Cushi Came, Monolith, Saliromania y Xeron.[2]​

En 2002 recibió el Premio Pilgrim (actualmente «SFRA Award for Lifetime Contributions to SF Scholarship»), que otorga desde 1970 la Science Fiction Research Association,[1]​[3]​ y en 2003 el Premio Edgar por The Mammoth Encyclopedia of Modern Crime Fiction.[4]​ Ganó el Premio Nova en 1991, el Bram Stoker for Superior Achievement in Non-Fiction en 1995, fue elegido para el First Fandom Hall of Fame en 2008 y recibió el Sam Moskowitz Archive Award en 2014.[2]​[5]​
