From 1774 he was general intelligence officer of the English commander Henry Clinton in New York. From 1779 he corresponded with General Benedict Arnold, who was disillusioned with the American cause.

In 1780, André obtained Arnold's consent to surrender at the West Point fort, being captured while returning to New York and incriminating documents found inside his boot.
