C.]] La escritura fue usada por los antiguos dialectos árabes meridionales como Sabeano, Catabaniano, Jadramiaco, Minaeano, Gimyaritico, y proto-Guézico en la escritura «''D`mt''».
Las inscripciones más antiguas del alfabeto datan del [[siglo IX a. C.|siglo IX a. C.]], en [[Akkele Guzay]], [[Eritrea]]<ref>Fattovich, Rodolfo, "Akkälä Guzay" in von Uhlig, Siegbert, ed. ''Encylopaedia Aethiopica: A-C''. Weissbaden: Otto Harrassowitz KG, 2003, p.169.</ref> y en el [[siglo VIII a. C.|siglo VIII a. C.]], encontradas en [[Babilonia]] y en [[Yemen]]. Su froma más madura fue alcanzada cerca del año [[500 a. C.|500 a. C.]], y su uso continuó hasta el [[siglo VII]] d. C., incluyendo variantes del alfabeto provenientes del [[Antiguo Norte de Arabia]] , cuando fue desplazado por el [[Alfabeto arábico]].
