Grabber Blue. Edsel Ford introduced the Mercury in 1939 as a model to fill the gap between the basic Ford, and the luxury Lincoln. The Mercury Cougar was based on Fords pony car, the Mustang from 1967-73, then the Ford Torino form 1974-80. The first generation Cougar was built from 1967-70, it was 3 inches longer than the Mustang and more luxurious. In 1967, it got a full-width 'electric shaver' grille with hidden headlamps, base or the luxury XR-7. GT Performance package available. In 1968, the Cougar got side marker lights. The XR-7Gs got hood scoop, fog lamps, and hood pins. The GT-E package got the 390hp 427 V8. 1969 saw a body facelift, the grille switched from vertical bars to horizontal bars, available in 2 door hardtop and now convertible as well. The base engine was now the 250hp 351 Windsor, the performance model was now the Eliminator, 351, 390, 428CJ or Boss 302 engines. The Eliminator got a black grille, stripes, spoilers, rally wheels, full instrumentation and better suspension. 1970 saw a new front end which featured a pronounced center hood extension and electric shaver grille similar to the 1967 and 1968 Cougars. No 390 but 351 Cleveland available. |
