Twenty-year old Aliz?e Poulicek from Huy in Lige province is the new Miss Belgium 2008. Aliz?e, a blond foreign trade student with Czech roots, beat off stiff competition at the finals in Antwerp on Saturday evening.
Despite her obvious charms, she still needs to do some work on her Dutch, as she was unable to express her self in the language spoken by around 60% of the Belgians.
This provoked a negative reaction from the Antwerp audience. All five finalists were interviewed in Belgiums two most widely spoken languages (Dutch and French).
Aliz?e was unable to answer when she was asked questions in Dutch, while the two other French-speaking competitors Fabienne and Ana?s from Brussels were both perfectly bi-lingual, as were the two Flemish finalists.
Nevertheless, the electoral college made up of the panel of judges and the telephone votes of the general public came out in favour of Aliz?e. /
While Belgium is plunged into anew Community crisis, 20 girls from Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels capital, participe for the election of Miss Belgium 2008 during the great evening show. This 15 December, the Belgians might not have a government, but they will have a Miss to represent the country throughout the world! Since 1969, out of 39 elections, there were 24 Flemish Misses against 7 Walloon and 8 from Brussels. The importance and relevance of bilingualism for a Miss is fundamental and year after year, the moments of anguish for the girls are shown when they have to answer the questions in the 2 languages. Aliz?e Poulicek is the new miss BELGIUM 2008 and she doesn't speak Dutch. Jean-Michel Clajot / Cosmos
