The disputed boundary question was whether the new Stateshould include any of the province ofCoahuila, or not, and if it did whatportion. Texas claimed to the westas far as the Rio Grande, and north tothe border line between Mexico and theUnited States. Mexico held that thewestern boundary of her State, Texas,was the Nueces River. When, Decem-ber 29th, 1845, Congress admitted Texas into the Union, the United States was pledged to uphold the claims of Texas as against Mexico. 489. Declaration of War.— President Polk had taken the necessarysteps to defend the disputed territory from any occupation by the James Knox Polk was a native ofNorth Carolina. His father intendedto make a merchant of him ; but asthe son was opposed to business life,he finally allowed him to enter collegeand to study law. He showed greatabilities in his chosen line, becameSpeaker of the House of Representa-tives, Governor of Tennessee, andPresident of the United States. Mr.Polk was born in 1795, and died in1849.

TheState ranks among the foremost in theproduction of cotton, cattle, sheep,horses, and sugar. About a third ofthe State is agricultural, while theremainder is pastoral. The LoneStar State is sixth in population,having over three million inhabit-ants. Mexicans. During the summer of 1845 he had sent GeneralZachary Taylor (iT 500), with a large force, to take possession of thecountry between the Nueces and the Rio Grande. Obeying these orders of the President, Taylor seizedCorpus Christi and awaited furtherorders or developments. During thespring of 1846 the President tookthe responsibility of ordering GeneralTaylor to proceed to the Rio Grande.Taylor moved his forces to the mouthof the Rio Grande and was there re-quested by the Mexican general, Arista,to retire to the Nueces. Taylor refused, and therefore a portionof the Mexican force crossed the river
