The letter closed with a warning that any of our vessels venturingwithin six miles of the forts would be fired on, regardless of flags of truce. This warning was so absurd as to be amusing, as our vessels lay every daywithin four miles of the forts, and frequently ran right under them. But theoccasion presented an opportunity for the Spanish commander to indulge ina little cheap bravado, and he could not resist it. Blanco declared that Hobsonand his men were his prisoners, and he intended to keep them as long asHavana held out; adding, in the language of a common bully: If you wantthem, come and take them.
