This beautiful springtail is an Adelphoderia species. I found it in a cave somewhere near Nelson, NZ. I don't have a location exactly yet but I'll geotag when I know. This isn't a cave species as far as I can tell as there's little sign of adaption to a dark environment. I'm going caving again on Saturday so it'll be interesting to see if they're in those caves too. This is a member of a very small group of springtails that have a neck organ, looking a little like a neck brace, that probably aids in respiration.
In NZ caves, and the Southern hemisphere in general, cave springtails don't seem to be based on Arrhopolites species as it can be in the Northern hemisphere, and so far, none have been recorded in NZ caves. So it's going to be interesting to spend a few days checking them out and seeing what I can find. I've already seen cave wetas, cave spiders and glow-worms.
