ellata has been cultivated in England fince the year 1/77, at which time it was firltraifed from feeds; received from the Cape of Good Hope by Mellrs. Lee and Kennedy, Hammerfmith,at whofe nurfery our figure was taken in the month of Auguft 1800. It is a very hardv plant, andnot at all fubjeft to the very common fate of its congeners; that is, to damp in the leaves, or rot atthe root in winter; is propagated by cuttings, to Le made in the month of April or May, and treated asdirected for the other Proteas. The plant feldom grows higher than three feet, and does not makemariy branches; but is of a lively green colour, both leaves and ftem. We have, as ufual, adopted thename this plant is generally known by, it having been lb named by the younger Linnaeus in his Suppl.Plant. 118, and by Thunberg in his Dilfertatio de Protea, n. 34, and his Prodromus 26. But whyor how a fmall, clofe head of flowers may be denominated an umbel we muft confefs our ignorancein this application of terms. !P/
