e. Nurserymen usuallyhave less ground-work on hand at the buddingthan at the grafting season, and therefore findit convenient to propagate at the former period.Besides, if buds should not take, the stocks canbe grafted in the following spring. In orderthat the graft may form a sound union, atten-tion to a few particulars is necessary. Thescions should be taken off early in the season,say in January, or at least before the budsbegin to push. At the same time the stockshould be headed down near to the place wherethe scion is to be put on. If either the scionor the stock, or both, are too far advancedwhen they are cut, success is rendered uncer-tain. Even if the graft should take, gum orcanker is likely to follow. The grafts of Plumsare more apt to fail than those of Apples andPears; yet, when the stocks are early headed 156 THE GARDENERS ASSISTANT. down and the scions taken off in good time, asdirected, they will generally succeed. In budding, care must be taken that woodand not blossom buds are inserted; and ingrafting, it is necessary to see that there arewood buds on the scion. Occasionally it maybe desirable to propagate a particular variety,the shoots of which have scarcely any woodbuds, except their terminal ones; and whensuch shoots must be employed for scions, thebuds at the extremities should not be cut away;they must form the terminal bud of the scion.
