Korstanje Maximiliano (Ciudad de Buenos Aires, 29 de octubre de 1976) es un profesor titular e investigador del Departamento de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Especialista en temas asociados al terrorismo, turismo oscuro y movilidad[1]​. Sus estudios se centran principalmente en los efectos socioculturales del 11 de septiembre y del terrorismo en la sociedad moderna.[2]​

Biografía editar

Korstanje Maximiliano E. (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 29 de octubre de 1976) es investigador principal del Departamento de Ciencias Económicas de la Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Teórico social trabaja temas relacionados con la movilidad, terrorismo y el turismo moderno.[3]​ Korstanje es editor emérito de la revista International Journal of Cyber Warfare and Terrorism[4]​ y edita dos series temáticas en su especialidad: Advances in Hospitality, Tourism, and the Services Industry (AHTSI) (IGI Global EE. UU.) & Tourism Security-Safety And Post Conflict Destinations (Emerald Group, Inglaterra).[5]​

Korstanje se ha dedicado a estudiar los efectos del terrorismo dentro de la industria turística y la sociedad moderna de consumo.[6]​[7]​ Su tesis principal apunta al 11 de septiembre de 2001 como un evento que ha fundado una nueva forma de capitalismo donde el terror se ha convertido en un espectáculo mediático, ampliamente consumido y demandado por las audiencias globales.[8]​[9]​ Las consecuencias de los atentados llevados a cabo el 11 de septiembre no sólo demuestran un largo alcance, sino que han transformado radicalmente la forma de comprender al "Otro" en Occidente[10]​[11]​.  Por su parte y para crear un clima de inestabilidad política,[12]​ el terrorismo moderno planifica sus atentados en espacios públicos de consumo, turismo y ocio recreativo buscando crear un mayor grado de temor, al menor costo operativo posible.[13]​[14]​[15]​ En tal sentido, el turismo oscuro puede comprenderse como un mecanismo de resiliencia el cual evita la fragmentación social y mitiga el trauma psicológico luego de un ataque terrorista.[16]​[17]​.

En una entrevista reciente para Saint Pierre Center for International Security localizado en la provincia de Guangzhou, China, Korstanje analiza los efectos del COVID-19 en la industria del turismo y la hospitalidad. Según sus declaraciones, los efectos a largo plazo de la pandemia de COVID-19 son de similar naturaleza y alcance a los atentados terroristas del 2001[18]​.

Preocupado por la crisis ambiental y migratoria, Korstanje ha discutido sobre las limitaciones de las democracias liberales para comprender al "Otro no-occidental"[19]​. En tal sentido, su tesis (centrada en los aportes del sociólogo José Ingenieros) sugiere que las democracias occidentales experimentan una crisis de sentido producto del resurgir de nuevos movimientos autoritarios. Dichos movimientos se enraízan en el retorno de un estado teocrático, propugnando por la anulación de la división entre religión y estado. Su tesis apunta a que el mercado clásico ha sido el sostén no sólo del estado moderno sino del proceso de secularización política, el cual ha sentado las bases de la democracia liberal moderna[20]​. La globalización del mercado ha generado una implosión entre la esfera de la ley sagrada y secular. En su libro José Ingenieros: Yesterday and Today, Critical Readings, publicado por Routledge, Korstanje describe también la crisis del socialismo y el postmarxismo para resolver el problema migratorio actual. En dicho trabajo, su autor acuña un neologismo, para describir una nueva forma de gobernanza que reemplaza a la democracia liberal, democracia autocrática (autocratic democracy).[21]​.

En los últimos años, su trabajo estuvo abocado a la aplicación de métodos pedagógicos con el objectivo de resolver la crisis educativa en turismo y hospitalidad en la nueva normalidad Post COVID-19. Junto a Alejandra Zuccoli, trabaja en la aplicación de métodos que reduzcan la deserción universitaria a la vez que mejoren el rendimiento académico de alumnos de grado y post-grado. El método consiste en la introducción de experiencias sensoriales agradables para potenciar el rendimiento cognitivo a largo plazo[22]​.[23]​[24]​. Los resultados de la experiencia se encuentran publicados en un libro titulado The Role of Pleasure to Improve Tourism Education por la prestigiosa editorial ciéntifica Springer-Nature.

Reconocimiento y Distinciones editar

Korstanje ha sido profesor visitante y conferencista en diferentes universidades extranjeras y nacionales entre las cuales se destacan la Universidad de Leeds, Reino Unido, Universidad de La Habana, Cuba y Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Reino de España.[25]​ En 2018 su biografía es incluida en Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award otorgada por la firma Marquis Who´s Who in the World, EE. UU.[26]​ Posicionado como un prolífico autor en su campo,[27]​[28]​[29]​[30]​ Korstanje se desempeña como director del Centro de Investigación en Turismo y Hospitalidad,[31]​ y de la revista International Journal of Safety and Security in Tourism/Hospitality, ambos dependientes de la Universidad de Palermo.[32]​ Korstanje es editor científico de la revista Estudios y Perspectivas en Turismo (CIET, Argentina)[33]​ y Miembro fundador del Consejo Asesor de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Universidad de Especialidades Turísticas, Quito, Ecuador.[34]​

En 2022, Korstanje es incorporado como Académico de Número en la prestigiosa European Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, una asociación global y crítica que sigue los lineamientos teóricos de Jean Baudrillard. La organización cuenta con la membresía de importantes exponentes como: Douglas Kellner, Jerome Krase, Geoffrey Brian West, Oleg Maltsev, Lucien Oulahbib, Antonio Nicaso, Massimo Introvigne y Emilio Vilano entre otros.

Por su parte, Korstanje se encuentra posicionado dentro del top 100 de científicos más productivos de la República Argentina y dentro de los 10.000 ciéntificos más destacados de América Latina, según el índice AD-SCIENTIFIC INDEX- ALPER & DOGER- según índices de impacto H-Index e I-10-Index.
